BIO–tract
™ Technology
FloraSMART™ utilizes BIO-tract ™ delivery technology which
is engineered to deliver probiotics to their optimal
locations. BIO-tract ™ is a patent-pending controlled
delivery technology developed specifically for beneficial
microorganisms. BIO-tract ™ is the first true oral
controlled release technology that utilizes recognized and
proven principles from the pharmaceutical industry to
preserve, protect, and deliver its payload from the store
shelf, through the harsh environment of the stomach, and
into the intestines where they can be utilized. After
swallowing the tablet, a protective gel layer surrounds the
tablet and effectively isolates the bacteria to reduce any
harmful interaction with the acidic environment in the
stomach. Once passing through the stomach, it releases the
organisms in a controlled fashion over time, delivering the
living bacteria to the small intestine so they may populate
the intestinal tract.
An example of how this technology
compares to other products is as follows:

Individually sealed packets
Each FloraSMART serving is individually packaged in a foil
sache (packet) for traveling convenience and protection.
Shelf stability
FloraSMART’s probiotic formula is stable at room temperature
because its probiotics are isolated within the tablets core,
thanks to Bio-tract’s protective layer, resulting in a
product that is less susceptible to heat, moisture, and
oxidative stress.
What are probiotics?
The term “probiotic” means supporting life. Probiotics are
friendly and beneficial bacteria. Although there are
hundreds of different strains of bacteria that live in the
digestive tract, two of the most prevalent types of
beneficial bacteria are lactobacillus acidophilus and
bifidobacterium bifidum. These bacteria (as well as others)
are normal inhabitants of the large and small intestines.
Why are probiotics so important?
Recent research on probiotics suggests that these friendly
bacteria improve gastrointestinal functions, respiratory and
allergy response, and may counter the negative effects of
antibiotic use.* Probiotics support our immune systems,
balance intestinal environments and inhibit the growth of
unfriendly organisms.* These beneficial bacteria: 1) produce
vitamins, 2) aid in absorption of nutrients, and 3) crowd
out unfriendly organisms.
Which probiotics are best?
Most commercial probiotic products are made up of multiple
species of Lactobacilli or Bifidobacteria. Some of
the Lactobacilli species are resident (L. acidophilus) and
others are transient bacteria (L. casei). Both resident and
transient species are beneficial. Resident species live
naturally in the digestive tract. Transient species provide
benefits while they pass through the digestive system. One
strategy is to use a product that contains multiple resident
strains of (L. acidophilus or B. bifidum) bacteria and to
use specific, well-tested transient strains (L. casei) to
provide additional benefits.
