"L-tyrosine is an essential amino acid that rapidly crosses the blood brain barrier. It is a precursor for the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, for hormones such as thyroid and chatecholamines, and for enkephalins, special peptides which subdue messages of physical discomfort. Tyrosine is also a constituent of protein amino sugars (glycosaminoglycans) and amino lipids (glycolipids), special compounds which have important roles throughout the body."
