Saw
palmetto (Serenoa repens)
The
fruit extract of this herb has been traditionally used to maintain
healthy bladder, urethra, and prostate function. The clinical efficacy
of this extract and its tolerability have been demonstrated in
numerous clinical trials, including double-blind studies.
Saw
palmetto berry extract has been shown to benefit the prostate by
inhibiting dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes prostate cells to
multiply. It also inhibits the action of testosterone 5-alpha
reductase, an enzyme that causes additional DHT production. Possibly
most important is that saw palmetto modifies immune function in the
prostate, supporting the prostate's ability to neutralize
"oxidative stress" associated with prostate diseases.
The
Pygeum africanum is a tall evergreen tree which grows around
Africa. The brown bark of this plant has been used as a folk remedy
for bladder health and proper urinary flow. The lipophilic extract of Pygeum
africanum counteracts prostate prostaglandins, another important
factor in maintaining prostate health. Clinical studies have shown Pygeum
africanum extract to be particularly beneficial in maintaining
proper urinary tract function.
Pumpkin
seeds have long had a reputation as a beneficial dietary supplement to
promote healthful urinary function. This property, of course, makes
the pumpkin seed especially well suited to support prostate function.
Pumpkin seed oil extract contains the essential fatty acids, which are
useful for optimal prostate health. In a double-blind, placebo
controlled study, a combined application of pumpkin seed oil extract
with saw palmetto berry extract showed enhanced effectiveness in
supporting healthy prostate function, even though the saw palmetto
berry dosage was reduced.
Aged
Garlic Extract (AGE)
A
variety of health related benefits of AGE have been widely
demonstrated. Physicians from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
at Cornell University recently found that S-allylmercaptocysteine
(SAMC), a sulfur compound characteristic of AGE which is only produced
during the aging of garlic, can break down dihyrotestosterone which
accelerates abnormal cell growth. Both this peculiar organosulfur
compound and AGE have also demonstrated antioxidant activity in
studies. These effects in combination with AGE's ability to promote
healthy circulation and immune function, make AGE essential for a
quality a supplement aimed at providing nutritional support for
healthy prostate function.
Very
high levels of lycopene are found in healthy prostate tissue.
Scientific interests have addressed an association between Lycopene
levels in the prostate and the health of the prostate, with reduced
levels being associated reduced health. An epidemiological study
conducted in Italy showed that intake of tomatoes and tomato products,
which are the primary source of Lycopene, was strongly associated with
healthy prostate function. The tomato oleoresin in Prosta·Logic
also contains other antioxidants such as carotenoids,
vitamin C and vitamin E, which work synergistically with lycopene in
producing antioxidant and immune stimulating effects that may benefit
prostate health.
Zinc
is concentrated in the prostate more than any other organ in the body.
It has been shown to help support healthy immune function and to
suppress damaging free radicals both on its own and as a constituent
of many vital enzymes, including the antioxidant enzyme superoxide
dismutase (SOD). Zinc has been shown to inhibit the production of DHT
(responsible for cell multiplication) as well as to inhibit its
ability to bind receptors, thus allowing for increased excretion of
this hormone.
Zinc
picolinate is the best form of zinc due to its high bioavailablity
making it ideal for supporting healthy prostate function.
