Though there are many natural nutrients that
support brain function, certain of these stand out as being especially
beneficial. With the current use of "smart drugs," most of which are relatively
untested, naturally occurring nutrients are becoming increasingly desirable
because they are effective, safe, and much less costly.
SuperNutrition's Think Clearly
is an extremely comprehensive nutritional formula combining key
brain nutrients, amino acids, nutritional herbs and greenfoods.
|
|
- Ginkgo Biloba (with over 200 European studies showing its
benefits and antioxidant-like activity), Gotu Kola and
Basil, the "happy" herb.
- DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) is a natural compound that
helps to increase acetylcholine levels in the brain better than
choline itself and in moderate amounts (i.e.100 mg/day), it can be
quite effective in delivering nutritional support for healthy and
efficient brain function. In one study, subjects reported that they
noticed a difference in their feeling of alertness and clarity with
dosages of DMAE as low as 30 mg. per day.
- Phosphatidyl Choline, our preferred form of supplemental
choline for brain nutrition. Choline is the nutrient precursor that
feeds the efficient production of the critically important brain
neuro-transmitter, acetylcholine, as well as being an important
component in nerve sheath coatings.
- Amino-acids. Specific amino acids are necessary for
healthy and efficient brain function. These amino acids act as foods
(precursors) that become neurotransmitters (messengers) in the
brain. We include the important "neuro-aminos", glutamine,
phenylalanine, and tyrosine.
- Peaceful herb, Chamomile, is included to balance the
other brain foods.
- Phyto-chemical-rich greenfoods including Alfalfa,
Spirulina, Chlorella and Kelp give the tablet its food-like
cellulose-rich make-up for super-easy digestion and extra-efficient
absorption.
Niacin--The Forgotten Brain Nutrient
When most people are asked what's the best
nutrient for memory, few give the correct answer. Is it Ginkgo? DMAE?
Choline? They've all been shown to be effective and are very important
to brain function. That's why we include them in Think Clearly.
But surprisingly, the most effective, least promoted and least expensive
basic brain nutrient is niacin. Niacin is the more active form of
Vitamin B3, as differentiated from the less active form, niacinamide.
While niacin's best-known effect is lowering serum cholesterol, for
which it's prescribed over one million times a year at therapeutic
levels, its effect on the brain at nutritional levels is even more
important for many people who suffer from poor memory.
One Of Niacin's Many Roles (In Memory)
Niacin is one of the nutrient molecules that is necessary for the proper
function of the enzyme called mono-amine oxidase (MAO). MAO, among its
many duties, detoxifies or "cleans" the brain of the "brain toxic"
by-products of the metabolism of the essential amino acid, tryptophan.
These by-products are chemical cousins of hallucinogens like LSD, which
are known to interfere with some of the brain's normal healthy
functions, including affects, mood and memory.
Gilka L, The Biochemistry of The Schizophrenias,
Journal of Orthomolecular Psychiatry. 1978; 7(1):6-16
Studies show that niacin deficiencies may be the underlying cause of
several imbalances in brain chemistry that impair normal and optimal
performance of the brain. That's why niacin may also benefit those who
suffer from senility and depression.
Think Clearly contains nutrients to support healthy
brain function including 100 milligrams of niacin.
Niacin's Effect On Memory
"Netherlands Study Finds"
Memory Improvement Of 10% To 40%
A double blind study done was done in 1985 to see if 425 mg daily could
affect memory. It showed that 425 mg daily (in three divided doses of
141.7 mg) could increase memory test scores from 10% to 40%.
Loriaux SM, Deijen JB, Oriebeke JF, De Swart JH. The effects of
nicotinic acid and xanthinol nicotinate on human memory in different
categories of age. A double blind study. Psychopharmacology (Berl)
1985;87 (4):390-5
ABSTRACT: The treatment effect of nicotinic acid and xanthinol
nicotinate on human memory was compared with placebo in 96 healthy
subjects. Forty-three subjects were young (35-45 years), 30 subjects
were middle aged (55-65 years) and 23 subjects were old aged (75-85
years). Pre- and post- treatment scores were measured on a battery of
memory tasks, covering sensory register, short-term memory and long-term
memory. The treatment regime was 1 dragee t.i.d for 8 weeks. The
administration of xanthinol nicotinate (500 mg, containing 141.7 mg
nicotinic acid), nicotinic acid (141.7 mg) and placebo (lactose) was
double blind. Pre- and post-treatment scores were analyzed by means of
multivariate covariance technique, the pre-treatment score serving as
covariate. Nicotinic acid treatment resulted in improvement of
sensory register and short-term memory. In comparison with placebo,
both active compounds yielded improvements of 10-40%,
depending on the task. Treatment effects of nicotinic acid were
predominantly found in the young and middle-aged, whereas treatment
effects of xanthinol nicotinate were predominantly found in the old.
These results are interpreted by the supposed activity of nicotinic acid
at the cell membrane. improving neuronal transmission, and of
xanthinol nicotinate inside the cell, enhancing cell metabolism and
oxygen supply in the brain.
Comment: While the above study was done with 425 mg of niacin daily, the
benefits of niacin supplementation, begin before that measured-level is
reached.
This is called "dose-dependent benefits", and indicates that some of the
benefits for memory begin somewhere before the 10% to 40% improvement
level is reached.
So to deliver an amount of niacin that does have some (as yet,
scientifically unmeasured) benefits, we include 100 mg of niacin, and to
ensure that it does not result in a niacin skin flush, we use a special
"two-stage double-release low-flush" formulation of niacin.
Since 3 Think Clearly tablets deliver 100 mg of
niacin, each tablet delivers 33.33 mg of niacin. Our "two-stage
double-released low-flush" niacin delivers 16.66 mg of niacin
immediately upon tablet disintegration and the other 16.66 mg of
niacin approximately one-half hour later. Even if you take all three
Think Clearly tablets at once, you only get 50 mg
immediately and 50 mg in about one-half hour. With this delivery
system, we have never had a report of anyone getting a niacin flush
from Think Clearly (although it is possible that
someone taking all three daily Think Clearly
tablets at one time could get a niacin flush.)
While there are no independent scientific studies evaluating niacin's
effect on memory at doses lower than the 425 mg used in the above study,
in a 15% Sampling of 1800 SuperNutrition users,
73% reported improvements in mental skills, mental clarity and/or memory
within 30 days. 85% were taking 300 mg of niacin from the
Opti-Packs and 15% were taking additional niacin.
About The Niacin Flush
Think Clearly uses niacin, the more biologically active
form of Vitamin B-3 rather than the less-active form, niacinamide. One
of niacin's most beneficial nutritional effects is an enhanced blood
supply to the skin (as well as to the internal organs and glands). This
is called the "niacin skin flush". The pink-to-red itchy skin flush
indicates relaxed middle sized and smaller arteries resulting in
increased blood flow without additional work by the heart. This in turn
indicates increased delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the cells as
well as increased waste removal from the cells. This is a very desirable
nutritional effect, but it can be disconcerting.
It is usually characterized by a warm-to-hot transient reddening of the
skin that generally lasts about 30 minutes, but may last up to two hours
or more (rare). The flush may bring some itching and may be followed by
a slight passing chill as the enhanced blood supply to the skin returns
to normal. Quite often, after a few days of regular supplementation, the
flush may diminish. Some people however, continue to flush regularly.
Avoiding The Niacin Flush
The most effective way to avoid a niacin skin flush when taking
Think Clearly is to take one Think Clearly
tablet after breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Occasional Side Effects Of Higher Niacin Intakes
A very few people may also experience a mild, transient headache or a
slight upset stomach for a few minutes on beginning niacin
supplementation. These effects usually no longer occur after a day or
two.
Also, about one person in a thousand may experience a mild rash (which
may last from an hour even up to a month) or feel sluggish rather than
invigorated when taking Vitamin B3 as niacin. The sluggishness lasts
about four hours. These people should take a supplement that contains
niacinamide rather that niacin.
We Recommend Careful Use Of Niacin For Those Seeking
More Mental Clarity And Better Memory
Obviously, we recommend Think Clearly for people who
seriously want to help their memory, but we also want them to:
- Recognize the possibility of a niacin skin flush.
- Know that it has no detrimental effect on healthy body
chemistry.
- Then decide whether to try niacin or not.
We Feel Fast-Release Niacin Is Best
We caution niacin users that slow-release and time-released niacin may
overwork liver enzyme systems, and therefore we recommend and use
fast-release niacin.
