Facts about Green Pea and Rice Protein
Protein is composed of chains of amino acids and constitutes about 20% of our
total body weight. It functions as the structural material of muscles, other
tissues and organs, as well as important biological substances such as enzymes
and hormones. Protein is also converted to glucose and used as a source of
energy. When there is limited protein intake, the needs of the organs take
priority over the needs of the muscles. While other macro nutrients are equally
important, protein provides a key foundation for good health.
Cultures all over the world have learned the value of combining grain and legume
proteins for optimum nutrition and health. These protein combinations have the
advantage of delivering not only all essential amino acids,1,2
but also a wide variety of naturally occuring vitamins, minerals, and
phytonutrients.3 At
the same time they are low in fat.4 Furthermore, while high intake of animal
meat has been associated with increased risk of cancer of the colon,5
breast,6,7 and
prostate,8,9 diets
high in legumes and other vegetarian proteins appear to actually decrease health
risks.10,11,12
Nature’s Life® Green Veg Pro-96® provides protein from several non-soy
vegetarian sources. Green pea protein isolate is a legume protein with a Protein
Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) of 0.98, virtually identical
to the highest possible score of 1.0, while rice protein has been compared
favorably to other plant-based proteins using the Protein Efficiency Ratio. Oat
bran provides additional protein as well as valuable beta-glucan fiber. Finally,
almond powder supplies protein from a whole food source that is increasingly
recognized for its health benefits for weight management and heart health.13,14
Facts about
Plant Fibers
Plant fibers
occur in both soluble and insoluble forms. Insoluble fiber is the more familiar
“roughage” that helps maintain intestinal health by improving digestive
function, growth of friendly bacteria, and waste elimination.15,16
Soluble fiber has special properties that helps guarantee optimum metabolism of
fats and carbohydrates, thereby helping to support normal lipid and blood sugar
levels.17 Nature’s
Life® Green Veg Pro-96® protein contains a generous amount of both soluble and
insoluble fiber from oat bran, oat fiber, psyllium husks, and apple pectin. The
soluble fiber in one serving provides one-third of the daily amount considered
effective for helping to prevent heart disease when used with a diet low in
saturated fat and cholesterol.18,19
This includes one gram per serving of beta-glucan, an oat-based soluble fiber
shown to be especially effective for supporting healthy blood sugar levels20,21
and normal lipid levels.22
Facts about
Phytonutrients from Green Foods
Nature’s Life®
Green Veg-Pro 96® protein adds Phytogreen Blend, a combination of organic
Hawaiian spirulina, organic barley grass, natural chlorophyll, and kelp. This
blend provides a highly nutritious combination of naturally occuring amino
acids, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients such as carotenoids and
flavonoids.23,24,25,26
Carotenoids and flavonoids are well known for their multiple benefits as
antioxidants, cell membrane stabilizers, and other tissue supportive functions.27,28,29
Ingredient
Facts
Nature’s Life®
Green Veg-Pro 96® protein contains 17 grams of high quality protein per serving
(33% of daily recommended intake), plus proteolytic enzymes to ease digestion.
Does not contain added sugars or other sweeteners. Only 3 grams net
carbohydrates and 2.5 grams fat per serving. Eating foods high in saturated fat
and cholesterol is known to increase blood lipid levels and, in turn, increase
the risk of heart disease and stroke. Nature’s Life® Green Veg-Pro 96® protein
contains no cholesterol. Soluble fiber from foods such as oats, as part of a
diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.
A serving of Nature’s Life® Green Veg-Pro 96® protein supplies 1 gram of beta
glucans as soluble fiber from oats.
