SAM-e is an
important physiological agent formed in the body by combining the
essential amino acid methionine with adenosyl-triphosphate (ATP). It is
involved in over 40 biochemical reactions in the body. SAM-e functions
closely with folic acid and vitamin B12 in methylation reactions- the
process of adding a single carbon unit (a methyl group) to another
molecule. It is many times more effective in transferring methyl groups
than other methyl donors. Methylation reactions are critical in the
manufacture of many body components, especially brain chemicals, and in
detoxification reactions. The New York Times called SAM-e "a gentle
remedy" and "a rival of Prozac". According to evidence documenting SAM-e's
anti-depressant abilities SAM-e is an even better antidepressant that
St. John's wort. In double-blind clinical studies between 1973 and 1987,
SAM-e was proven superior to tested placebo.
Among those typically deficient in tissue levels of SAM-e are the
elderly and patients suffering from osteoarthritis, depression, and
various liver disorders. A deficiency of methionine, vitamin B12, or
folic acid can result in this decreased SAM-e synthesis. However, high
supplemental doses of methionine neither increase associated levels of
SAM-e, nor provide equivalent pharmacological activity. They are also
associated with some degree of toxicity. As of this writing,
supplementation with SAM-e appears to safely and effectively treat these
conditions. SAM-e is also used in the treatment of fibromyalgia and
migraine headaches.
